“The Board of Directors is looking forward to working with Chris to exceed the expectations of our members, clients, stakeholders and visitors to Santa Clara”, said Paul Dines, Chair of the Santa Clara Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors.

Mayor Talks About Santa Clara’s Future

Santa Clara Mayor Lisa Gillmor gave a brief update on the State of the City.  She is pleased with the progress that is happening in the downtown area of Santa Clara (near Franklin Square and the University).  She recognized SiliconSage Builders for their development in this area, while also recognizing Related California for their proposed City Place project next to the Convention Center and across from Levi’s Stadium.

Mayor Gillmor said that the City has to “take advantage of the economic opportunity that we have – progress is taking place in our City and it’s still going to happen.”  Taking advantage of these economic opportunities will help the City recover from the loss of the more than $13 million in leases that the City lost with the dissolution of the RDA.  It is her hope that the ground lease from the City Place project will help to replace some of this income.

During her discussion with Roy Truitt, Interim President & CEO for the Santa Clara Chamber of Commerce & Convention-Visitors Bureau, Mayor Gillmor said that the City has a healthy reserve fund and she wants to continue to maintain it.  “It’s great now, but  we need to work hard to make sure it is stable for the future.”  In response to a question about future developer fees charged by the City, the Mayor explained that the fees are a way to try to generate more funds for park areas to recreate for both residents and businesses in Santa Clara.  With more residential housing, she wants to make sure there are recreation opportunities available.  The fees are a way to ensure this.

As for the future City Manager position, she stated the City “needs someone that is forward thinking, creative, economic development-minded, but also community minded.”  She commented that much has been accomplished under Julio Fuentes, but there is still much to be done.  The job will be challenging as the new manager will need to be someone who can work with not only some of the largest companies in the world that are trying to locate here and do business here, but the residents that have been here for years and the newer residents.

In closing, she talked about the jobs/housing imbalance and the loss of the RDA funds to create affordable housing.  “It’s the moderate income housing that most of us fall into….it’s the middle class that’s out there trying to make a living” and for these residents it’s hard to live here.  “The positive side of the imbalance is that we’ve had so much business here in the past, that we’ve generated a lot of tax income.  We could then have wonderful streets, parks, all those types of amenities that our residents have enjoyed.”  She then went on to say that the biggest challenge is the affordable housing, which is needed – the dissolution of RDA took away this vehicle.  She would like to see more diversity of housing, to include for-sale housing as well as rentals and senior housing.

Along with reps. from event planning company Caravents and Santa Clara University, Andre coordinated talent appearances at the Pep Rally held inside Leavey Center at Santa Clara University.

Santa Clara residents and fans from throughout the Bay Area were able to get free autographs from previous Super Bowl champion players including John Taylor, Ricky Watters, Keena Turner, Eric Wright, and Cliff Branch as well as current 49ers team safety Eric Reid. Other talent appearing at the event included Oakland Raiderettes and 49ers Gold Rush cheerleaders, Miss California Teen USA, Santa Clara Vanguard Drum & Bugle Corps, PEANUTS characters Charlie Brown & Snoopy and Santa Clara University Athletics mascot Bucky the Bronco.

Minimum Wage Ordinance – Your input is necessary

money

The Santa Clara City Council requested that City staff review an increase in the City of Santa Clara’s minimum wage to take effect on January 1, 2016.  The Santa Clara Chamber of Commerce & Convention-Visitors Bureau encourages businesses to learn more about the proposed ordinance and to complete our online survey. The increase would be an amount above the State of California’s minimum wage increase from $9 to $10 per hour, which will also take effect on January 1, 2016.  The amount currently proposed is $11 per hour.

Please take a moment to complete the Survey.  WE VALUE YOUR OPINIONS AND NEED YOUR INPUT!

Outgoing Message from Steve Van Dorn, President and CEO

CEO

After 13 years of being in charge of the Santa Clara Chamber of Commerce and Convention – Visitors Bureau, I have made a very difficult decision and decided to move on to a new opportunity effective March 31, 2015.  I have been fortunate to experience so many positive changes in my almost 20 years in Santa Clara, working with the Chamber of Commerce and Convention – Visitors Bureau and the Santa Clara Convention Center.

I was fortunate enough to play a visible role in supporting Levi’s Stadium, appearing in TV commercials for Measure J and conducting a joint economic benefit study of the stadium with Team San Jose. I have also had the pleasure of serving on the San Francisco Bay Area Super Bowl 50 Host Committee.

My career started out in the hospitality industry so it was a great honor to be awarded the Hospitality Achievement Award in 2012 by the Silicon Valley Concierge Association.  I was also very happy to give back to the chamber industry as the Chair of the Western Association of Chamber Executives this last year.

I was also fortunate to oversee the construction of Santa Clara Convention Center’s Mission City Ballroom expansion and to be part of numerous accolades such as being named Best Event Venue from the Silicon Valley Concierge Association and receiving top meeting planner awards.

Most importantly, I will miss working with all of our stakeholders and staff in making Santa Clara a better place to work, live and play.  Thank you for all of your support over these many years and my best wishes to your continued success.
