Kaiser Permanente Turns 70!

Kaiser Permanente celebrated a major milestone last month. On July 21, 1945, Kaiser Permanente opened its health plan and hospital doors to the public. By the end of that first year we were caring for 26,500 members. Now, 70 years later, we care for more than 10 million members, in 8 states across the country.

To honor our past and to celebrate the remarkable employees and physician who provide excellent care every day, Kaiser Permanente San Jose and Santa Clara held lunch hour recognition celebrations.

At each gathering, recorded 1940’s music played in the background and guests were treated to small cupcakes decorated with the number “70” as they looked at large posters and a historical slideshow detailing Kaiser Permanente’s growth. There are now 38 Kaiser Permanente hospitals and 622 medical offices stretching from California, Hawaii and the Pacific Northwest to Colorado, Georgia and Washington, DC.

California’s Great America

California’s Great America is celebrating 40 seasons of creating smiles for Bay Area families. Adventure seekers enjoy exhilarating thrills on Gold Striker – “California’s best wooden coaster,” Flight Deck, Demon and Drop Tower. Family rides include the tallest double-decker carousel anywhere and Rip Roaring Rapids. Plus, the little ones can enjoy the expanded Planet Snoopy kids area.

Boomerang Bay, California’s only combination theme and waterpark, includes a wave pool, waterslides and a lazy river to enjoy the California sun. Live entertainment includes an acrobatic areal ice show and impressive musical performances. In October, Halloween Haunt, the Bay Area’s premier Halloween event, provide haunting scares for those who dare.

From its  origins in a small, developing farming to community, to its current role in the center of what’s possible in Santa Clara, Great America has always enjoyed it’s Chamber partnership. The connections and alliances provided by the Chamber have been a strategic part in Great America’s success. The Chamber is willing to assist whenever called upon and is a vital cog for businesses large and small in Santa Clara.

SummerHill Housing Group

Ranging from large estate homes to urban condominiums with SummerHill Homes, to multi-family apartment homes with SummerHill Apartment Communities. SummerHill builds a variety of home styles featuring high quality architecture, and exceptional attention to detail. Since its inception in 1976. SummerHill has proven expertise in working closely with cities and neighborhood constituents to successfully integrate new home communities into the texture of the surrounding neighborhood by developing the most compatible housing type, architectural style, and urban plan for each site. SummerHill has demonstrated its strength and focus for achieving Communities of Distinction throughout the entitlement process by preserving and improving upon the existing neighborhood integrity, and creating positive neighborhood development partners.

We define our excellence by our relationships, the quality of our communities and in every aspect of our operations. Our collaboration with The Santa Clara Chamber of Commerce provides a vital link to the Santa Clara community, and ensures our projects reflect the needs of both the residents and businesses that call Santa Clara home.  The Chamber’s ability to listen to and advocate for the concerns of its members while also being a knowledgeable resource for its members creates a self-perpetuating bond that only increases in value over time.  The attributes we at SummerHill hold high – quality, distinction, and opportunity – are the same attributes we find in the Chamber, its members and in Santa Clara as a whole.

City of Santa Clara Passes Minimum Wage Ordinance

The City Council for the City of Santa Clara passed an increased minimum wage ordinance that will take effect on January 1, 2016.  The new minimum wage will increase from the current $9.00 per hour to $11.00 per hour.  The State of California has a mandated increase from $9.00 to $10.00 per hour on January 1, 2016 – this minimum wage would supercede that rate.  The ordinance, which was approved by the City Council on September 22, 2015, includes the following provisions:

  • The rate will be $11.00 an hour as of January 1, 2016.
  • The ordinance will apply to employers that maintain a place of business in Santa Clara and/or provide goods/services within city limits.
  • To prevent inflation from eroding its value, beginning on October 1, and each year thereafter, the Minimum Wage shall increase by an amount corresponding to the prior year’s increase, if any, in the cost of living.  The prior year’s increase in the cost of living shall be measured by the percentage increase, if any, as of August of the immediately preceding year over the level as of August of the previous year of the Consumer Price Index (Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers, U.S. City Average for All Items) or its successor index as published by the U.S. Department of Labor or its successor agency, with the amount of the Minimum Wage increase rounded to the nearest multiple of five cents. The adjusted Minimum Wage shall be announced by October 1 of each year, and shall become effective as the new minimum wage on January 1 of the following year.

The City of Santa Clara will be providing a wage information posting that you will need to have placed next to your California and Federal Employment posters.  When the City’s informational page is available, the Chamber will be sending out an email.  In the meantime, if you have any questions or comments, please submit them to
